Dr. Daniel Roelke leads an international team of scientists into the hauntingly beautiful underworld of Yucatan cenotes. The research team is exploring cenotes along a transect from Cancun to Merida, Mexico, spanning rural to urban areas in this karst landscape. The focus of the research is on relationships between cenote water quality and land-use practices. The pristine nature of this extensive aquifer is also what makes it so vulnerable to anthropogenic contaminants. The research is a collaboration between AgriLife Research at Texas A&M University and the Cancun Laboratory of Centro de Investigación Científica de Yucatán.
