By integrating outreach, teaching
and science, we create a rich environment for collaborative learning in
place-based research. Citizens, students, faculty and partner benefit
by reaching outside the academic community.

Outreach
Sharing our research
results with leaders in communities, provides important benefits
for diverse stakeholders, including: developers, conservationists,
regulators and landowners. As we do this, we strive to mentor
youth in ways that will stimulate and encourage them to consider
careers at the interfaces between science and society.

Teaching
Our plan is to develop
educational modules appropriate to "slot into" university
courses, presenting results of the research at levels building
from most basic to in-depth. The basic information will be designed
to increase awareness of the tools, skills and knowledge that
are available. The more in-depth materials will be designed for
practitioners who want to use the information in the context of
their jobs. We also hope to develop continuing education short
courses for participants outside the university community.

|
Science
To provide a sound
scientific basis for decision-making, results of this research
will be published in peer reviewed journals. Since the research
is interdisciplinary, we will publish in the journals of our respective
disciplines of Conservation Biology and Environmental Anthropology,
as well as journals integrating perspectives of ecology and society.
